Remembering the fallen on Armistice Day
Published: Monday 11 November 2024

The Armistice Day Service in Hamilton today remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Wreaths were laid in commemoration and a two-minute silence observed, following the Last Post, at the Victoria Cross Memorial in the town.
Depute Provost Bert Thompson and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Dr William Morrison Young joined Rev Ross Blackman of Hamilton Old Parish Church, Rev Joanne Hood from St John’s Parish Church and military veterans.
Pupils from Hamilton College, councillors, council officials and members of the public also attended the service.
A number of events also took place across South Lanarkshire yesterday, Remembrance Sunday, including at the Cenotaph in Bothwell Park.
Among those in attendance was Provost Margaret Cooper and Vice Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Gavin Whitefield.
Provost Cooper said: “Remembering the sacrifices made not only honours those who gave their lives but reminds us that we all have a part to play to ensure that their deaths were not in vain.
“We remember them and we never forget.”
The Victoria Cross memorial commemorates the residents of Hamilton who were awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War and the Second World War.
