Winter Awareness Week - flooding
Published: Thursday 24 October 2024

As well as the risks posed by snow, ice and low temperatures, winter in Scotland can present another big challenge - flooding.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) works with police and councils to identify flood risks, and is responsible for issuing national flood alerts.
In the event of severe flooding, the council will work with the police and fire and rescue to assess what needs to be done.
If necessary, we will also co-ordinate reception centres and arrange temporary accommodation for anyone evacuated from their homes.
If you have any concerns about flooding, you can contact the council at any time on 0800 24 20 24 or your local roads office during working hours.
Other agencies involved in flood risk management and dealing with floods as they happen are:
- Scottish Government - responsible for setting policies at the national level.
- Scottish Flood Forum - a community-based organisation that supports and represents those most at risk from the impact of flooding.
For a wide range of information on what we do to plan for, mitigate, and deal with flood risk and events, see our comprehensive flooding advice and support pages on the council website.
