Reminder to respect your surroundings

Littering is a year-round problem that affects us all.

But during the summer months, in particular, the issue can become even more of a scourge on our parks and open spaces, our streets and shopping areas.

And the message from South Lanarkshire Council on behalf of our residents is clear – respect your surroundings and your neighbours, and don’t hesitate to report those who don’t.

Chair of the Housing and Technical Resources Committee, Councillor Davie McLachlan, said: “Littering is a serious form of anti-social behaviour that affects each of us, and it is our intention to tackle the issue and those who create it, head on.

“We have some beautiful parks and open spaces across South Lanarkshire and there is nothing worse than them being spoiled by selfish individuals who can’t be bothered to look for a bin or take their rubbish home with them.

"It really is time for us all to show our streets and neighbours the respect they deserve and take pride in where we live, work and play, for all of our sakes."

Six 'solar' bins (above) were introduced at James Hamilton Heritage Park in East Kilbride last year, offering increased capacity as well as an alert system when full.

Councillor Robert Brown, Chair of the Community and Enterprise Resources Committee: “The council is determined to stamp down on this problem.

“South Lanarkshire is a fantastic and unique mix of urban and rural. As a place to live, work and visit, it offers so much. Yet, there are a stubborn few who have no qualms about treating our communities like glorified waste bins. We need to come together as one and say enough is enough.”

The penalty for dropping litter in Scotland is currently £80 in the form of an on-the-spot fine. Council officers have the power to issue the fines and urge anyone who is concerned about areas or issues near them to report any related anti-social behaviour issues by calling 0800 389 1105 or by completing our online form.
