Setting rent levels for 2024-25
Published: Friday 28 June 2024

Each year, the council reviews its budget and business plan in order to set new rent levels for the year ahead.
This year, with ongoing economic challenges continuing to affect the council in how it delivers important housing services, it was clear that a rent increase in line with inflation was required for 2024-25.
Following extensive consultation with tenants, this year’s rent increase of 6.5% ensures council house rents remain affordable while allowing for continued investment in existing and new council homes. This level of increase is broadly similar to that being applied by other social sector landlords throughout Scotland.
During the consultation, tenants were also supportive of the proposal to return to a three year approach to setting rent levels, allowing both the council and tenants to plan and budget on a longer term, which is important during this uncertain economic climate.
South Lanarkshire Council continues to be one of the most affordable landlords in Scotland with the lowest average rent in South Lanarkshire.
Sharon Egan, Head of Housing Services said: “The rent increase for this year is necessary to ensure we can continue to invest in existing council homes and build new ones. It is a priority that rents remain affordable, while also enabling us to deliver high-quality housing services that tenants in South Lanarkshire expect."
