Repairs for bridge begin on Thursday
Published: Tuesday 7 November 2023
Urgent repair work is to take place from this Thursday (9 November) on a bridge in Hamilton.
A section of the Avon Bridge on the A72 Carlisle Road was damaged a few weeks ago following an accident.
The council’s Roads and Transportation team have been routinely inspecting the damage, and they have noted severe recent deterioration in the condition of the damaged section of the wall of the bridge. This has meant repairs need to be started sooner than anticipated.
Head of Roads,Transportation and Fleet Services, Colin Park, said: "The work will consist of taking down and rebuilding the damaged length of roadside masonry wall.
“All available measures to minimise inconvenience to road users will be taken but some phases of the work will require the implementation of a single lane closure on Carlisle Road which will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.
“The traffic control will be in place this Thursday and Friday, not in place over the weekend and back in position for the duration of next week. Temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled by an operator over peak times.
“We would ask for patience from road users during the works, which, weather permitting, should take around three weeks.
“Please avoid the area if possible, and if not, leave extra time for your journey. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience."
