Work begins soon to improve the surface of Hamilton’s Douglas Street
Published: Wednesday 26 July 2023
Work will be carried out to upgrade the surface of a Hamilton street early next month.
The council will carry out the work on the section of Douglas Street that runs between Clydesdale Street and Caird Street from 8am on Monday 7 August and 8pm on Friday 11 August.
The road will require to be closed between these dates and a diversion will be in place via Douglas Street, the A72 (Almada Street), the B7071 (Bothwell Road) and Caird Street.
Every effort will be made to maintain access wherever possible for residents and businesses who live or work within the closure, but there may be times when their movement will be significantly delayed depending on the status and progress of works on site. Traffic Marshals and site staff will be there to advise and assist residents during the working day.
Councillor Robert Brown, Chair of the Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, said: “This is important work to improve the road surface. Unfortunately, the road is not sufficiently wide enough to safely maintain vehicular access while these resurfacing works are being carried out so there will inevitably be some disruption.
“We will, of course, make every effort to accommodate local businesses and residents, but local residents may find it easier to park their vehicles outside the area of the road closure before the works start.
“In general, we ask that people avoid the area if possible during the works, and if they cannot manage to do so, that they leave extra time for their journey and plan their routes accordingly.
“We apologise in advance for any inconvenience but hope all road users will recognise the improvements to the road once they are completed and that the long-term gain outweighs any short-term pain these works might create.”
