New tennis courts in place in time for Wimbledon
Published: Wednesday 28 June 2023

The nation is once again about to be gripped with tennis fever with the annual Wimbledon tournament just around the corner.
And tennis enthusiasts across South Lanarkshire can now take advantage of two brand new 2G tennis courts at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds.
Chief Executive of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC), Kay Morrison, said: “The new tennis courts are looking fantastic and are in place just in time for Wimbledon starting.
“The great thing is that the 2G surface can be used all year round, so if you are new to tennis, or want to get back into it, there’s no better time to pick up your racquet.
“With the work at the tennis courts and pitches now complete, it reaffirms Hamilton Palace Sports Ground as a flagship facility for SLLC, offering a wide range of high-quality facilities.”
As well as the tennis courts, a new seven-a-side pitch was completed early and has been in use the past few weeks.
The two old tennis courts and one five-a-side pitch were converted to create the new seven-a-side 3G pitch.
A further three five-a-side 3G pitches have also been completed as part of the work at Hamilton Palace Sports Grounds. The shock pads and kickboards to the perimeter walls of the pitches have also been renewed.
The work has been completed by Sportex Group, and the existing synthetic carpets will be recycled at their new recycling plant in Grangemouth. This will prevent bulk waste being transferred to landfill, helping to meet South Lanarkshire Council’s sustainability objectives. The plastic waste from the synthetic carpets can now be recycled into boards which can be used for landscaping projects and around artificial pitches to contain the rubber infill.
A metal grid has also been included within the design of this project which will increase the retention of the rubber infill within the pitches.
