Summer holiday programme available for low-income families
Published: Monday 26 June 2023

Hundreds of children from low-income families are being invited to take part in the council’s summer holiday programme this year.
A total of 11 hubs based in primary schools and other locations across South Lanarkshire will deliver a targeted intensive 2-week programme which will run daily from 10am to 2pm with lunch provided, plus breakfast for any children who need it.
The programme is for youngsters aged 5 to 14 from low-income families in the most deprived areas who might not otherwise have access to activities, childcare, nutritious food or wider support during the school holidays.
A wide range of activities will be on offer that will include, but are not restricted to, arts and crafts, sports, team building, STEM sessions and outdoor play.
Two locations will specifically provide support to children and young people with additional support needs (ASN).
Executive Director of Education Resources, Carole McKenzie, said: “We are pleased that we are able to offer another summer holiday programme this year which I hope will be welcomed by children and families.
“Building on the success of previous years, our staff will work tirelessly to give all children who attend a positive experience.
“Invitations to families have been issued after referrals from Head Teachers, from across the Youth, Family and Community Learning Service and via partners such as Social Work Resources, kinship carers, and the Housing and Technical Resources Resettlement Team.
“In addition to this planned provision delivered from the hubs, it should be noted that Universal Connections facilities and Youth Family and Community Learning Service Projects will be providing summer holiday programmed activities across the summer break.”
Council funding for the summer holiday provision remains at £143,000, in line with previous years. The specific share of Scottish Government funding due to South Lanarkshire is expected to be around £230,000, bringing the total funding available to £373,000.
The council provides a range of other supports for low-income families, including direct payments to continue free school meals provision to those who are entitled to them during the school holidays.
