A report from Education Scotland has highlighted the leadership and strengths of the teaching community at Stonelaw High School.

Following a visit from an HMIe team of inspectors a report was published outlining the outstanding inspirational leadership and support of the pupils understanding and wellbeing at the Rutherglen school.

The report praised the “outstanding, inspirational and understated leadership of the headteacher” who was well supported by a highly effective senior leadership team. And “staff, young people and parents work collaboratively and constructively across the school”.

Headteacher at Stonelaw High School, Ms Brenda McLachlan, said: “HMIe conducted a very supportive, positive inspection of our school. Staff, pupils and parents are pleased with the evaluations, and I feel these are a reflection of a whole team approach to supporting each other, our young people and our families.

“We are a school that places a high emphasis on the wellbeing of pupils. We want all of our young people to feel supported, valued, respected and included in the life of our school. Our approaches to wellbeing provide a strong foundation for learning and this coupled with high quality teaching, very effectively supports young people as they journey through our school.”

The report also emphasised the positive impact that the very high-quality of teaching had to help the pupils learn effectively through a wide range of very skilful approaches to the way they deliver learning, teaching and assessments.

Councillor Lynsey Hamilton, the chair of the council’s Education Committee, said: “This report highlights how important it is for our teaching staff to work closely with the whole school community to achieve such fantastic results.

“Ensuring that every pupil gets an excellent education as they progress through their final years before moving on from school is a vital stage in securing them a successful future.

“A big thank you and congratulations to Ms McLachlan, all her staff and Stonelaw’s learning community for all their hard work which has clearly been reflected in this excellent report.”

The report also stressed how the “outstanding approaches to supporting young people’s wellbeing” supported, valued, respected and included pupils into the life of the school with the pupil support team highly responsive to the needs of every pupil.

Ms McLachlan added: “As a school we all work hard to provide our young people with the best education possible along with opportunities to showcase and celebrate their achievements. Our ethos and values play a significant part in creating an inclusive environment for learning and achievement, which everyone across the school community makes a valuable contribution to.

“I would therefore wish to thank our staff, pupils, parents and families, as well as members of the community for their continued support, as they have played a significant part in helping us to achieve what is a very positive report.

“The role of the parent council was also highlighted by the inspection team as exemplary.”
