Scott and Helen's relationship got off to an eggs-ellent start
Published: Wednesday 26 April 2023

A Strathaven couple owe their lifetime of devotion to one another thanks to a common everyday food item.
Scott Bennie met Strathaven lass Helen Stewart when her family were delivering eggs to his father’s butcher shop in Larkhall.
And they have certainly cracked the code for a successful marriage, having recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary.
The couple married on 17 April 1963 at Rankin Church, followed by a reception at Wester Overton (now Strathaven) Hotel.
After short stays in both Larkhall and Hamilton, the couple settled in Strathaven with their two children Janice and Robert.
Over the years Helen could be found serving customers in the local shop seeing through the changing from John Menzies to WH Smith and finally RS McColl’s, enjoying the chance of a blether with the day’s customers.
Scott moved the couple’s caravan and motorhome hire business to Hamilton Road Industrial Estate and diversified into a car garage setting up SB Services. He also enjoyed having a chat with customers.
The couple over the years have loved motorhome holidays with their three grandchildren (Heather, Gillian and Alex), the highlight of each holiday finding new coffee shops and baker shops to explore.
After finally retiring the couple can be found supporting many organisations in the town in particular Trinity Parish Church, and still exploring new coffee shops and bakers’ shops.
Provost Margaret Cooper was delighted to present the couple with flowers, a special bottle of whisky and a certificate from the council to mark their 60th wedding anniversary, while Deputy Lord Lieutenant Dr William Morrison Young represented the King and passed on to Scott and Helen a certificate to mark their wonderful achievement.
Provost Cooper said: “It was an absolute pleasure to meet Scott and Helen and be a small part of their special celebrations.
“Huge congratulations to them and I wish them all the best for the future.”
