Carluke community climate conference a huge success
Published: Wednesday 5 April 2023
The first annual community climate conference hosted by One Carluke Area Network (ONECAN) has been declared a huge success.
Supported by South Lanarkshire Council and a number of community organisations, delegates were treated to a selection of fun and thought-provoking workshops and market stalls.
This included displays on Active Travel and connecting to nature with Get Outdoors Lanarkshire, with the opportunity to try out E-bikes and have a go on the seed-bomb bike.
Host for the day was Dr Heather Reid OBE, affectionately known as Heather the Weather from her days as a broadcaster and senior weather forecaster on BBC Scotland. Scientist Heather is passionate about protecting our natural world for future generations and praised the community of Carluke for taking bold and positive steps to tackle climate change at local level.
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Climate Change and Sustainability Committee, Councillor Mark McGeever, said: “It was great to hear that the day was such a success and highlights that collaboration between communities is key to tackling the climate emergency.
“Thanks have to go to ONECAN and the wider Carluke community for all the work they are doing locally – by coming together like this, we can truly make a difference.”
Speakers at the event included former Minister for Environment Biodiversity and Land reform Mairi McAllan, Heather Ashworth from Keep Scotland Beautiful and Scene consultants who presented the community-led Carluke Carbon Emission Report.
