A Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) Team have been monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling past their school.
Kirkfieldbank Primary School’s JRSO Team of Aimee and Robert, assisted by Jak and Ruby, took part in a mobile Speed Indicator Display Sign (SID) visit.
The sign was set up along from the school on Riverside Road with the JRSO team having a high presence wearing their high visibility jackets.
Drivers heading towards Lanark direction were targeted with the sign displaying their speed. The speed was displayed on the sign and dependant on the speed the vehicle was travelling, either displayed a happy or a sad face. Various vehicle types were seen passing the school in both directions.
Chair of the council’s Road Safety Forum, Councillor Davie McLachlan, said: “Well done to the JRSO team at Kirkfieldbank Primary School.
“I hope they made drivers using the roads around their school think twice about the speeds they are driving at.
“We need to encourage drivers to take more responsibility for their speeds and this type of initiative should be applauded.”
All schools are invited to take part in the JRSO Scheme each year. Pupils can be Primary 6 or 7 and have an important role of highlighting road safety in their school through competitions, speaking at assemblies, having a notice boards and general road safety promotion throughout the school year.
The school was one of the first schools to receive a visit from the Traffic and Transportation Section with this sign and another visit will be scheduled in the New Year.
Within the school vicinity, 20mph road markings and yellow carriageway surfacing are in place along the school frontage, not only to remind drivers about the school location but also their speed. Yellow backed 20mph signage has also been installed at both approaches to the school to highlight the mandatory 20mph.
The JRSO’s ask everyone to: THINK 20MPH AND SLOW DOWN AROUND SCHOOLS.
