Community groups and organisations across South Lanarkshire are being invited to help offer a “warm welcome” this winter.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect people across the area, it was agreed a network of warm spaces would be introduced in community settings and public buildings where members of the public are welcomed and can access advice and support.
The first phase of this is to ask community groups who have bookings across halls, centres and schools to open their doors and invite their wider community neighbours in to join them.
In turn, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) will waive accommodation charges until 31 March 2023.
The groups and organisations must agree to welcome other members of the community to join them with no charges being applied to any individual.
Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “We have a range of packages and further supports coming soon to help people cope with the cost-of-living crisis.
“The Warm Welcome initiative is at the forefront of that – inviting people into safe, welcoming spaces across South Lanarkshire.
“I would ask community groups and organisations to get in touch as soon as possible if they want to take part in the initiative.”
If you would like to be part of this initiative or find out more about “Warm Welcome”, please go to South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture's website, complete the form and return it to: warmwelcome@southlanarkshireleisure.co.uk.
As well as offering “Warm Welcome” spaces, SLLC and SLC are also offering free access to its swimming pools for under 16-year-olds until 31 March 2023. This free offer applies during public swimming sessions. Details of public swim sessions are available on our website or by contacting your local Leisure centre. Please note under 8’s must be accompanied by an adult/s over 16 years as per SLLC’s under 8’s policy.
A new package of funding up to £3million for the Warm Welcome initiative will go to SLLC from South Lanarkshire Council.
