Provost Margaret Cooper was the first person to sign one of the books of condolence set up following the death of HM The Queen.

Books of condolence have been set up at Cambuslang, Carluke, East Kilbride, Lanark, Hamilton and Rutherglen.

Provost Cooper signed the book of condolence at the council HQ in Hamilton.

She said: “It was very humbling to be the first person to sign the book, and although my message was personal, I also signed on behalf of the people of South Lanarkshire and for anyone who for any reason cannot sign one of the books themselves.

“Her Majesty The Queen was by the country’s side through some of our brightest and darkest days, and always did so with a dedication and love for her people.

“Although this is of course a very sad period, it should also be a period for reflection and admiration for someone who was so loved by so many.”

Council Leader Joe Fagan also signed the book of condolence in Hamilton.

Members of the public are welcome to attend any of these locations and add their signatures to the books of condolence. The books are available now and staff will be on hand to direct people to them.

Anyone who cannot go to one of these locations may want to sign the official online condolence book on the Royal website.

Residents who wish to place floral tributes can do so in the open space at the flagpoles in front of the council’s HQ Almada Street, Hamilton, ML3 0AA. Anyone who cannot use that space may want to consider somewhere appropriate nearby, such as their local war memorial.
