National award for council and local Gypsy/Traveller community
Published: Friday 20 May 2022
The council has won a national award for its work with the Gypsy/Traveller community.
The COSLA Excellence Award for ‘Excellent People, Excellent Outcomes’ was recognition for the hard work and success both parties have demonstrated, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Early in the pandemic, officers quickly recognised the issues facing the Gypsy/Traveller community and, taking into account Scottish Government guidelines, provided additional support and assistance to residents.
The council and site residents forged strong relationships enabling key services to continue to be delivered as well as a range of improvement projects on both council Gypsy/Traveller sites. Improvements have included a new community facility, upgraded heating and amenity units, the installation of Wi-Fi, the expansion of pitch sizes and increased parking for residents and visitors.
Recognition of this approach has continued, with the council being shortlisted for the UK wide Municipal Journal awards, due to take place on 24 June 2022.
Annette Finnan, Head of Housing Services, said: “We are fully committed to improving the lives of Gypsy/Travellers and will continue to build on the strong relationships developed before and during the pandemic. We recognise the importance of providing safe and attractive places for Gypsy/Traveller residents to live, that are culturally appropriate and meet current and future needs.”
A Shawlands Crescent Resident said: "By working with the council as a team, our community has been fully involved in big decisions about the site, making us feel valued. We are seeing real improvements to the site and can see that the council really respects our culture and traditions. This has all been possible through strong teamwork."
Princess Anne visits South Lanarkshire
Following on from the success at the COSLA awards, Springbank Park Gypsy/Traveller site in East Kilbride welcomed a very special visitor – HRH Princess Anne.
HRH was received by Gavin Whitefield, Deputy Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, council representatives, politicians, and the families who live there.
Princess Anne heard about the excellent work that has been undertaken by the council and residents to improve the site and services, as well as the success at the awards.
