Investment priorities correct say majority of tenants

Tenants have played a key part in setting South Lanarkshire rents and investment priorities for 2022/23.
This year’s annual rent increase was set at 2.2% for a second year, with tenants once again at the heart of the process.
Despite the continuing Covid-19 restrictions there was a significant programme of engagement through virtual platforms to support scrutiny by the Budget Scrutiny Group and an online survey for tenants.
Over 1,100 tenants gave their views on the proposed rent increase as well as the investment priorities through the survey, which was widely publicised across a number of channels. 90% of tenants who completed the survey agreed that the proposed investment priorities were the right ones.
The 2.2% rent increase ensures council house rents remain affordable while allowing for continued investment in existing and new council homes. The increase also takes into consideration the financial uncertainty facing tenants in light of Covid-19 as well as the current economic climate.
Budget Scrutiny Group member David Downie said: “The annual rent setting process is extremely important to all council tenants. We know the council has delivered a fair and transparent rent increase, taking into consideration the financial impact of Covid-19 and the current economic climate. We are satisfied that the rent increase will allow for continued investment in council homes while ensuring our rents remain one of the lowest across Scotland.”
Annette Finnan, Head of Housing Services, said: “By working closely with our tenants we have taken forward an extremely robust process with the Budget Scrutiny Group playing a vital role. The agreed rent increase means significant investment can continue to be delivered in improving our existing homes and in building new homes to meet the needs of our tenants. A key focus for us has been to ensure that our rents remain affordable.”
For any tenant experiencing financial difficulties, or concerns about paying their rent, energy and other household bills, there are a number of agencies than can provide financial advice and support, including: your local Housing Officer, the Rent Income Support Team, Money Matters Advice Service, Citizens Advice Bureau, the Energy Savings Trust and energyadvice.scot.
