And groups who are looking to host a celebration event for the milestone can now access funding.

The East Kilbride 75th Anniversary Grants is open to all constituted groups.

Chief Executive of South Lanarkshire Council, Cleland Sneddon, said: “The feedback from our recent survey indicated that people would like to see community led and centred events, and we would strongly encourage applications which will deliver these. 

“Some of the suggestions which were made include street parties, walking tours, time capsules, arts projects such as producing posters and banners, and events which recognise the history of the area.”

Although a village has existed in the East Kilbride area for hundreds of years, it was officially given new town status on 6 May 1947 as part of Scotland’s regeneration effort after World War II.

Created in large part to provide living space away from cramped conditions in parts of Glasgow, East Kilbride was the nation’s first new town and the most successful one to emerge from the programme, in terms of both population and economic growth.
