A chance to start building a rewarding career
Published: Friday 8 April 2022
An opportunity to start a rewarding career and contribute to their local area is on offer to young people in South Lanarkshire.
The council has a position for a Modern Apprentice in the Building Standards Team who will be trained to the appropriate National Standard through a practical combination of college attendance and on-the-job training and experience.
Building Standards is responsible for a wide range of services including processing Building Warrant applications and applications for relaxation of building standards, the inspection and monitoring of developments on site, assessing any work carried out without consent and taking any necessary action, and inspecting unauthorised or dangerous buildings and taking action such as the authorisation of remedial works and evacuation of buildings.
Pauline Elliott, Head of Planning and Economic Development at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “This is an excellent opening for a young person to start and develop a career that can take them through life. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme offers the best of both worlds, giving the chance to ‘earn while you learn’ and backing up the educational side with practical hands-on experience.
“We have seen many young people make a success of this opportunity and are looking forward to helping another apprentice into what can be a very rewarding career.”
The successful applicant will be based in Montrose House, Hamilton, and will be part of a team dealing with all aspects of the Building Standards function.
The position does not require any experience in the profession, but candidates should have:
- one Higher at grade C or above and three National 5s at grade C or above, which must include Maths;
- an understanding of Building Standards;
- an understanding of the importance of Health and Safety;
- an understanding of the benefits of effective teamwork and customer care principles; and
- a willingness to learn and adapt to the working and college environment.
The fixed-term contract is for an initial two-year apprenticeship position and is restricted to applicants who have recently attended a South Lanarkshire Council High School and/or live in the South Lanarkshire Area.
Candidates must also be aged 16 or over by 30 September this year and no older than 19 by the starting date, or aged between 20 and 29 if disabled or care-experienced.
The closing date for applications – which can only be made online on the myjobscotland website – is Tuesday 19 April.
Anyone requiring any further information relating to the application process is welcome to email the Modern Apprenticeship team at the council for assistance.
