Council stands with Ukraine

South Lanarkshire Council has condemned Russia in a unified message of support for the people of Ukraine.
All political groups came together at the final Council meeting of this term, labelling the invasion of Ukraine an appalling, illegal and criminal act.
Council Leader John Ross said: “We may have our political differences in our democracy but we know the time and place for unity – and we are all united in our absolute disgust at the actions of Putin and his commanders.
“The invasion is indefensible and inexcusable, both in its intent and its actions. It is clear from TV footage that civilian areas are being targeted and women and children are among the dead.
“The greater the number and the louder the voices of condemnation, the more likely it is that Russia may be forced to listen. So, I am pleased that South Lanarkshire is standing up to be counted on this important issue, and we will seek other ways of supporting the people of Ukraine.”
As a token of that support, the Ukrainian flag is being flown at the council’s headquarters, and Hamilton Town House, which is operated by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, is being lit at night in blue and yellow.
The full motion, put forward by Liberal Democrat leader Robert Brown and seconded by Councillor Ross, and agreed by the whole Council, says:
South Lanarkshire Council is appalled at the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and Belarus.
Noting that the waging of aggressive war is a criminal act under both international law and the Russian constitution, the Council joins with the civilised world in condemning the actions of President Putin in initiating the war which is taking an increasing toll of military personnel and non-combatant civilians alike.
The Council fully backs the United Kingdom government in partnership with other NATO allies in deploying measures aimed at ending the illegal Russian invasion and supporting the Government and people of Ukraine in the defence of their country and the lives and liberties of their people.
The Council stands ready to assist in all appropriate ways with humanitarian support and refuge to the people of Ukraine in this ordeal.
South Lanarkshire Council is reminded that peace, stability and democracy cannot be taken for granted even in Europe and stresses the value and importance of international institutions including the United Nations, the European Union and NATO in continuing to safeguard and advance liberal democracy, mutual security and economic prosperity in Europe and beyond.
The Council requests the Chief Executive to write to Andrey Yakovlev, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Scotland, conveying the Council’s condemnation of the actions of his Government.
