Adult and toddler

Adult and toddler swimming development

For children aged 13 to 24 months.

Aim

To encourage independent movement and develop the water confidence and core aquatic skills of the toddler through structured play.

Objectives

  • The toddler will have been involved in interaction with other adults and toddlers
  • The toddler will have experienced independent movement with buoyancy aids
  • The toddler will have developed some basic core aquatic skills through structured play focusing on enjoyment, fun and self-discovery
  • The toddler will have developed greater water confidence

Exit Criteria

1. With an adult in the water, demonstrate an independent standing and sitting entry into the pool

2. Demonstrate independently placing face in the water and exhaling (blowing bubbles) into the water

3. Float on front and back with or without buoyancy aids

4. Rotate between front and back lying positions

5. Push off wall to reach adult support on front and back

6. Demonstrate a continuous leg action on front and back

7. Show front and back paddle

8. Exit the water safely with adult support
