What is the Information Commissioner’s role?
The Commissioner is responsible for enforcing the Data Protection Act and offering advice and assistance to both the SLLC and the individuals or groups whose information is being held. The Commissioner will then look to see if any breach of the Act has occurred. He will advise on whether compliance with the Act was likely or whether it was possible a breach has occurred.
If it seems likely that a breach has been made the Commissioner will decide on what action we should take.
If we don't take the recommended action the matter can be referred to the courts - the Commissioner has no legal powers to award compensation.
