Balanced budget to support sustainable health and social care

2025/2026 budget approved

South Lanarkshire’s Integration Joint Board (IJB) has approved a balanced budget for 2025/26, ensuring that vital health and social care services continue to meet the needs of local communities.

At yesterday’s (Tuesday 18 March) IJB meeting, members confirmed financial plans that prioritise sustainability, efficiency and high-quality care, while recognising the ongoing challenges across the sector.

The financial plan reflects a commitment to innovation, workforce investment and partnership working to deliver the best outcomes for South Lanarkshire residents.

Professor Soumen Sengupta, Chief Officer of the South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Our focus continues to be to protecting vital supports and delivering meaningful improvements that benefit the communities we serve, particularly those who are most vulnerable and most at-risk.

“Despite a challenging financial climate, we have set a budget that allows us to maintain and improve essential services while ensuring long-term sustainability.

“This reflects our unwavering commitment to the people of South Lanarkshire — supporting their health, wellbeing, and personal independence. By working collaboratively with our partners and communities, we will continue to develop innovative approaches that make a real difference.”

The IJB has focused on addressing key priorities, including the recruitment and retention of a skilled workforce, enhancing support for unpaid carers, ensuring timely hospital discharges and investing in digital and community-based services to ensure accessible care.

Lesley McDonald, Chair of the IJB, added: “The IJB financial plans represent a responsible and forward-thinking approach, balancing financial pressures with the need to protect and improve services.

“I am grateful to our partners, staff, and community representatives for their continued dedication and leadership as we work together to deliver high-quality, person-centred care that meets the evolving needs of local communities.”
