Our programme is aimed at young people aged 16 + and gives you the opportunity to learn while you are earning a salary. You will work in one of the Council’s administration support sections in a range of locations across South Lanarkshire.
You will work on your SVQ qualification with support from an assessor and your supervisor in the workplace. You will also undertake a range of corporate training courses which are available to all employees within the Council. The wide range of training courses offered are designed to further enhance your existing skills and contribute to your development as a knowledgeable and valued member of South Lanarkshire Council’s administrative support team.

Choosing a career in Early Learning and Childcare with South Lanarkshire Council
We offer you the opportunity to gain experience working in a nursery while working towards an SVQ in Social Services Children and Young People at SCQF level 7. A Modern Apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to earn as you learn.
If you’re looking for a career for life which makes a positive difference to children and families, then working in early learning and childcare is for you. You will have an important role in supporting children and families and get a sense of personal achievement from knowing you are helping them develop and learn.
There’s great demand for childcare workers and it’s a career for males and females who want to help children achieve their potential and enjoy helping them develop their skills while being involved in a wide variety of play activities every day.
What kind of work is it?
Much of an Early Years worker’s day is usually spent working with young children and their families in nursery centres, nursery classes and outdoor play providing high quality Early Learning and Childcare. They provide opportunities across all areas of the curriculum for children to play and learn as well as providing a nurturing caring environment. Helping children with personal care, including toileting, washing and dressing along with providing healthy snacks and lunches all play an important part in the daily routine of the nursery.
What kind of skills do you need?
There are particular skills that are important for a job in Early Learning and Childcare. These include;

Childcare
Childcare is a challenging and rewarding career. Early Years workers provide care and education to young children helping to develop, learn and fulfil their potential through the delivery of a play based curriculum. They can work with a variety of families from all different backgrounds and of all different abilities and promote diversity in the workplace respecting different cultures and backgrounds. They support families who may need it and work closely with them to ensure the best possible outcomes for their children.
Childcare involves working with lots of different people who use social services;
- Babies and young people
- Carers and families of young children from a variety of cultures
- Children with physical and/or additional support needs
- Carers or parents with alcohol or drug dependency
- Children with chronic or long term medical conditions

You will work in one of the Council’s excellent Adult and Older People’s establishments, either Residential or Day Care and you will work towards an SVQ in Social Services and Health Care at SCQF Level 6 and perhaps even progressing to SCQF Level 7.

Essentials
You should:
- live in South Lanarkshire or have gone to a South Lanarkshire high school
- age restrictions may apply and this can be checked with the Modern Apprenticeship team at recruitment times.
You don’t need to have any qualifications but some voluntary work experience would be great if you have it.

Choosing a Construction Career with South Lanarkshire Council
If you are looking to build knowledge and skills that will benefit you for life, and make a difference to the people of South Lanarkshire then a job in one of our construction disciplines could be for you.
South Lanarkshire Council offer a variety of Construction Modern Apprenticeships:-
Craft Apprenticeships – working for our Property Services section - Joiner, Painter, Plasterer, Electrician etc.
You would be learning to carry out improvements to buildings by working on New Builds, refurbishment or maintenance of South Lanarkshire Councils schools, leisure complexes and housing stock. Day to day work would vary - you could be working in someone’s home, or a care home, a school or a library, you may be part of a team or you could be out with one tradesperson, so you would be supervised and learning from experienced tradespeople.
Technical Apprenticeships – working for our Consultancy Services section – Architectural Officer, Civil/Structural Engineer, Quantity Surveyor etc.
You would be learning to design and cost new build or refurbishment projects. Day to day work would vary from working in the office to going to one of the sites you are involved with, and you would be supervised and learning from experienced supervisors/managers.
Roads Apprenticeships – working for our Roads Section – Road Operative
You would be learning all the aspects of construction and maintenance of roads, including kerbs, iron work and drainage as well as repairing or replacing pavements. Day to day work would vary, you would be working in varying sized teams depending on what work you were carrying out, and you would be supervised and learning from experienced Road Operatives, Supervisors and Managers.
What skills, values and behaviours do you need?
As these apprenticeships are for you to learn, you don’t need to have experience, however you may require to have qualifications from school depending on what route you want to take. There are particular skills, values and behaviours that are important for a job in construction with South Lanarkshire Council, these include:
- Being an effective communicator
- Being eager and committed to developing your own knowledge and abilities, both at work and at college (if required)
- Having an awareness of Health and Safety
- Being able to work with others, or as part of a team
- Being able to treat people with dignity and respect

Becoming a Modern Apprentice will give you the opportunity to develop a career in Housing and Technical Resources and be trained to the appropriate National Standard by going to college and getting on the job training and experience.
As a Modern Apprentice you will be involved in providing a full quantity surveying service, for South Lanarkshire Council, on all other projects. As you will be learning on the job, as well as college, you will be able to provide advice on contract practice and procedures as well as the procurement process involved for financial regulations, quantity surveying guidelines and the council’s standing orders.
You don't need to have any experience in your chosen profession. What we do require is:
- a minimum of 5 National 5s (must include English and maths), and 2 Highers, useful subjects are maths, English, physics (This is due to college entry requirements for the HNC element of the course)
- an understanding of your chosen profession
- an understanding of the importance of health and safety
- an understanding of the benefits of effective teamwork and customer care principles
- a willingness to learn and adapt to the working and college environment
