Members of Parliament MPs

The four constituencies that fall within or partially within South Lanarkshire are as follows:

Lanark and Hamilton East Constituency - Angela Crawley (Scottish National Party)

East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow Constituency - Dr Lisa Cameron (Scottish Conservative and Unionist)

Rutherglen and Hamilton West Constituency - Michael Shanks (Scottish Labour)

Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale County Constituency - David Gordon Mundell (Scottish Conservative and Unionist)

The UK Parliament:

Based at Westminster in London, it deals with a number of powers that have not been devolved to the Scottish Parliament.

These include the constitution, foreign policy, immigration and nationality, social security, defence and national security, fiscal and economic affairs, trade and industry, nuclear energy, oil, coal, gas and electricity, employment and some aspects of transport including road and rail safety.

Future UK Parliament general election constituencies

For the UK Parliament general election on Thursday 4 July 2024, new constituencies will come into existence to replace those in the South Lanarkshire area, the new constituencies will be known as: - 

  • East Kilbride and Strathaven
  • Hamilton and Clyde Valley
  • Rutherglen
Part of the area of South Lanarkshire will also fall within two other constituencies which will be known as:- 
  • Clydesdale, Dumfriesshire and Tweeddale
  • Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke

Some areas of South Lanarkshire are in constituencies which are not administered by this council.

The towns of Carluke, Law, Braidwood and Forth are under the constituency of Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke which is administered by North Lanarkshire Council.

The majority of the towns and villages within the Clydesdale area are under the constituency of Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale which is administered by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
