Hairmyres transport interchange
As part of the East Kilbride Enhancement (EKE) Scheme, the existing Hairmyres loop is to be extended by approximately 1.4km, increasing the capacity and operational robustness of the EKE branch line.
To facilitate the infrastructure change, a second platform will need to be installed at Hairmyres station.
A study for Hairmyres Station in 2019 concluded that a station relocation option west of the current location enables a significant opportunity to provide an improved transport interchange for the local community, with increased capacity, car parking, and upgraded station facilities. The proposed location and improvements will also allow the station to better serve significant nearby housing development.
Developing the station in its current location poses a greater challenge from an operational and constructability perspective compared to the new location site. The existing location does not have as much room for planned improvements such as the transport interchange, active travel links, and provision of sufficient car parking for railway users.
The transport interchange facility will include:
- the provision of two new traffic signal-controlled junctions for the south and north areas
- park and ride provision including disabled spaces and EV charging spaces
- integrated public transport access
- the potential for a community EV charging facility
- provision of connections to the wider active travel network
- a new active travel bridge over the upgraded rail line
- secure cycle storage at the station building area
- street lighting
- CCTV coverage
- suitable landscaping
