School crossing patrols
School crossing patrollers help pupils and adults to cross roads safely at approved locations. They operate Monday to Friday before and after the school day to assist pupils on the school journey.
Deciding where patrollers should be
The decision is based on locally approved criteria for assessing whether a patroller should be provided. The criteria considers factors including the number of children crossing the road and the number of vehicles that pass during the same period of time, as well as the general safety of the location.
Generally patrollers will not be provided for secondary school pupils and will not be introduced at traffic signals with a pedestrian phase or at light controlled crossings.
