Blocked drains
Problems with drains, walls or garden areas
If a blocked drain is causing sewage to back up into your garden or you notice bad smells around your downpipes, the right person to contact depends on who manages your home.
Council tenants
Please report the issue to our repairs centre using the contact details on this page. We will arrange for the problem to be checked and repaired.
Private tenants
Contact your landlord as soon as possible.
Homeowners
You should contact your own contractor to clear any blocked drains on your property.
If you think the blockage is in the main sewer, contact Scottish Water, as they are responsible for public sewers.
Septic tanks
Some homes, especially in rural areas, are not connected to the public sewer system and use a septic tank. These tanks need to be emptied regularly to stop them overflowing or causing smells.
For advice about your own septic tank, including emptying schedules and maintenance, please contact Scottish Water.
If you are worried about a neighbour’s septic tank and need guidance, get in touch with our Environmental Services team. They can advise you on what to do and whether an inspection is needed.
