Benefits and where can a Foundation Apprenticeship lead?

Benefits

  • It's the same level as a Higher (SCQF 6). The only difference is that students are assessed as they go, so there is no final exam.
  • It counts as an entry qualification to all universities and colleges across Scotland. It will also help make a student’s personal statement really stand out.
  • It gives students great insight into their chosen industry and can sometimes be used to fast track part of a Modern Apprenticeship, or students might choose to go straight to work.

Armed with new skills, more confidence, an industry-recognised qualification and practical experience, a young person will have excellent options including:

  • Entry to the jobs market: their practical experience, work-readiness and new skills will enhance their C.V. and/or their personal statement.
  • Ability to access a Graduate Apprenticeship, going to work for an employer while studying for a degree.

Where can a Foundation Apprenticeship lead?

For students planning on entering the world of work, Foundation Apprenticeships can offer an opportunity to impress employers, gain relevant experience and try their preferred career before leaving school.

A Foundation Apprenticeship could help a young person get a foot in the door with an employer, to secure a Modern or Graduate Apprenticeship or if the plan is to go onto higher or further education a Foundation Apprenticeship is recognised by every college and university in Scotland.

Modern Apprenticeship

In the same subject, students could complete their Modern Apprenticeship more quickly because they will have completed some elements of their Modern Apprenticeship qualification during their Foundation Apprenticeship. Students completing their Foundation Apprenticeship through South Lanarkshire Consortium can apply to our Modern Apprenticeship programme with guaranteed interviews for Early Learning and Childcare, Health and Social Care and Business Administration.

College

Students can progress onto several National Certificates and Higher National Certificate/Diploma courses at college after completing their Foundation Apprenticeship.

University

All Scottish universities accept Foundation Apprenticeships. Students will be required to meet the essential entry requirements for their chosen course and their Foundation Apprenticeship may contribute to this.

Graduate Apprenticeships

Graduate Apprenticeships are a new way to study up to Master's Degree level while in a job. Most learning happens while in a workplace and this is supplemented by time spent at university or college during the work week.
