Work permits for young people
Children under the age of 16 employed in South Lanarkshire need a work permit.
It is the responsibility of the employers to make sure they have a work permit for each child in their employment under the age of 16 and to ensure that a risk assessment of duties is carried out.
Work permits are valid for the current school term, therefore a new application will need to be made if you continue to employ the young person.
How to apply
Fill out an application form and return to the Licensing and Registration office. The application must be completed by:
- the employer
- parent or guardian
- school
- doctor, if required
How the application is dealt with
When the completed application is received, if the type of work and hours are within the Byelaws and there are no objections the permit will be issued to the employer within seven days.
If you haven't heard from us within 28 days please contact Licensing and Registration Services and we will let you know about your application's progress.
You must bring proof of identification when you collect your documents.
If someone else is collecting them for you, they must bring something in writing from you stating that you give your permission. This must be signed by you and give the details of the person who is collecting your documents. The signature on the letter will be compared with the signature on the application form. We will not accept an email.
Can anyone object?
If the form is completed by all parties, this is confirmation that there are no objections.
How much does it cost?
It's free but there may be a charge for the doctor.
