Legal Services
Legal Services is responsible for providing legal advice to the council and runs a number of public services including registration and licensing.
The legal core teams deal with conveyancing, contract law, raising and defending court actions, employment and other tribunals and a wide variety of legal matters including freedom of information, data protection and archives and information management.
The Licensing section deals with civic licensing including taxis, private hire cars, street traders and window cleaners. It also serves the licensing divisions which deal with liquor and gaming licensing. It also deals with a variety of other areas such as public processions and work permits for young people.
Registration deals with births, deaths and marriages on behalf of the Registrar General for Scotland. Registrars provide a variety of civil ceremonies, including marriage ceremonies, civil partnership ceremonies and naming ceremonies.
They also conduct Citizenship Ceremonies for those granted British Citizenship. The Registrars also provide a variety of services related to Education Resources, such as school attendance councils and the Education Appeals Committee.
Legal services also used to deal with the District Courts but these transferred to the Scottish Courts in February 2010.
