Winter Fuel Payment

The UK Winter Fuel Payment is changing.

Unlike in previous years, not everyone of pension age will automatically receive it. Instead, it will be a means tested benefit that is only available to those who are of pension age and in receipt of certain benefits.

Who is eligible?

To receive a Winter Fuel Payment in 2024, you will now need to be born before 23 September 1958. You will also have to be in receipt of one of the following qualifying benefits during the week beginning the 16 September 2024:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance

What happens if I am already in receipt of one of these benefits?

If you are already receiving one of these benefits and you are of pension age, your Winter Fuel Payment should be paid automatically.

What if I am not in receipt of one of these benefits?

If you are not receiving one of these benefits, you will no longer be entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment. However, you should have your benefits checked by our Money Matters Advice Service or one of South Lanarkshire's Citizen Advice Bureaux.

If they identify that you do have an entitlement to one of these benefits, it may still be possible for you to apply for a Winter Fuel Payment, even if your entitlement is identified after the 16 September 2024.

Can I still get help if I have savings or a private pension?

Having personal savings or a private pension does not necessarily mean you are not entitled to additional benefits.

Struggling with your energy bills or the Cost of Living this winter?

If you are struggling with your energy bills this winter or the cost of living, there may be more support available that can help. This can be accessed through the Money Matters Advice Service or South Lanarkshire's Citizen Advice Bureaux.
