Closure of offices
Due to the public holidays, council offices will be closed on Wednesday 25 December, Thursday 26 December, Friday 27 December, and then again on Wednesday 1 January, Thursday 2 January and Friday 3 January 2025.
All local Social Work offices will be closed on Wednesday 25 December, Thursday 26 December 2024, Wednesday 1 January and Thursday 2 January 2025.
If you have a social work emergency when your local social work office is closed contact the Emergency Social Work Service on 0303 123 1008.
Urgent registration arrangements
Appointments for the registration of births and deaths can be made online for 27, 30 or 31 December 2024 and 3 January 2025. Appointments will be carried out remotely, which means we can complete the registration over the phone. If you require an in-person appointment at Council Headquarters in Hamilton on 27, 30 or 31 December 2024 or Friday 3 January 2025, please email licensing@southlanarkshire.gov.uk.
In the event of an emergency (for example, to carry out a death registration where the deceased has to be taken out of the country) during the holiday periods please contact our out of hours service on 0800 242024 who will contact a Registrar on your behalf.
Bin collections and waste services over the festive period
There will be no bin collections on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 December 2024 and Wednesday 1 January 2025.
Collections on the week following Christmas will be carried out two days later than normal and collections on the week following New Year will be carried out one day later than normal.
Please ensure that bins are not overfilled, lids are fully closed and no excess waste is presented beside your bin. If you have excess waste, you can take it to one of our household waste and recycling centres or request a bulk uplift when the service resumes.

All collections will return to normal on Monday 6 January 2025.
Burgundy (food and garden waste) bins
The collection of burgundy bins will be suspended over Christmas and New Year. The last uplift date will be Friday 20 December. The first uplift date of 2025 will be Monday 6 January.
Bulk uplifts
Bulk uplifts will be suspended over Christmas and New Year, the last uplift date will be Friday 20 December 2024. The first uplift date of 2025 will be on Monday 6 January.
Disposal of real Christmas trees
Real Christmas trees can be recycled in various ways throughout South Lanarkshire. Trees being uplifted must be cut into 5ft sections and tied together.
- We'll collect real Christmas trees placed beside your burgundy food and garden waste bin on your normal burgundy bin collection day between Monday 6 January and Friday 17 January 2025.
- If you don't have a burgundy bin, request a free garden waste uplift for your real Christmas tree. Uplifts can be booked online from Friday 27 December until 3.30pm on Friday 10 January. Trees will be uplifted between Monday 6 January and Friday 17 January 2025.
You can also take your real Christmas tree to one of our six Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC). Please remember that you need to book a slot for all HWRC's.
Household waste and recycling centres
Our household waste and recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day (Wednesday 25 December) and New Year’s Day (Wednesday 1 January). Opening times on other days are the same as regular winter opening times.
