Safe road crossings - Westwood, East Kilbride

Safe road crossings - Westwood, East Kilbride | South Lanarkshire Council
IdeaIn Westwood, East Kilbride, it can be difficult to safely cross roads as cars drive way above the speed limit in roads like Westwood Hill and Murray Road, with large volumes of traffic making the crossing difficult. There are no safe ways of crossing the road close to bus stops in lots of places in EK. As part of the current active travel plans could the council add zebra crossings near bus stops (where there is no other safe option to cross the road), so there is an emphasis on people safety (for the ones taking active travel) and car speed reduction (fuel and emissions savings).
ResponseIn terms of crossing measures, in the case of Westwood Hill, a school crossing patroller operates at its junction with Westwood Road and within the vicinity of New Plymouth. In the case of The Murray Road, a school crossing patroller operates at Our Lady of Lourdes and The Murray Road at Whitehills Terrace.

The majority of drivers assist with casualty reduction by undertaking their journeys in a considerate and courteous manner. Inappropriate driving practices can be reported to Police Scotland by telephoning 101 or online at https://www.scotland.police.uk/secureforms/contact/

In
terms of active travel infrastructure, as part of the East Kilbride Active Travel Study (ATS), the council undertook a consultation exercise in February 2019 regarding people’s travel habits and sought their views on walking and cycling. More than 400 responses were received to the survey as well as 300 comments on an online map. The feedback from this exercise was used to identify a future cycle network within the town as well as proposed priorities for creating it.

The link below takes you to a landing where information relating to the active travel network and its associated early priorities can be viewed. Westwood Hill and Murray Road amongst other roads within East Kilbride have been included in the final ATS report.

At
this time three early priorities identified within the final ATS report are currently being progressed as funding is made available.

It is our intention to begin to tackle other active travel links such as Westwood Hill and Murray Road once the early priorities identified as part of the East Kilbride ATS are complete.
