Leisure for under 16s
Idea | Making South Lanarkshire Leisure’s facilities free to all 16 years and under would help with mental health in young people by making free access to sports, gyms, swimming. It would encourage young people to get out more, stay fit and healthy and also combat any anti-social behaviour in communities. |

Response | This response has come from South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC): SLLC’s vision is “Healthier, happier, more connected lives”. There are a number of free access programmes that exist already for under 16s from the outstanding Active Schools programme, which provides physical activity programmes in every primary and high school across South Lanarkshire and youth peer led leadership programmes to the child healthy weight programme, again free and in co-production with NHS Lanarkshire. More generally, SLLC has a concession scheme, Leisure For All, which allows families and individuals who are in receipt of benefits discounted access to the gym, swimming, fitness and arts classes. SLLC also work with a number of local agencies providing additional free physical activity opportunities, many of these fit in with South Lanarkshire Council’s neighbourhood planning groups and deliver across many local agendas including physical inactivity, holiday hunger and diversionary activity. |
