Grounds maintenance - disposal of trees
Idea | Instead of leaving damaged or cut down trees why not put them all through a chipping machine and spread wood chip rather than leave cut trees to rot? This would be better for keeping weeds down. |

Response | Depending on where our arboriculture team are working we will dispose of tree cuttings and branches in the most effective way that will link in with our aims to reduce the council’s carbon emissions and any impacts on climate change. If the location is right, we will chip our tree cuttings and spread them to form a layer of mulch. However, if the trees are not dead then any mulch from “green” trees can actually have an adverse effect on healthy plants, so it very much depends on the location. Also, in locations such as woodlands it is better for us to leave log piles as these provide food and shelter for a significant number of ground insects and small mammals. Whatever we don’t dispose of in these ways is recycled and used to help make compost at one of our waste recyclers. |
