Beat the Street programme

Beat the Street programme | South Lanarkshire Council
ReferenceCom/PIA/24
SummaryThe Beat the Street programme focuses on empowering travel behaviour change across all levels of the community. It is designed to incentivise and monitor walking and cycling activity, during a game over a six-week period, across selected locations. The project involves the use of an activity tracking system (Beat Boxes). Intelligent Health are the contractors who have developed the programme and who will deliver it, including installation of the Beat Boxes.

The overarching aim of the programme is to encourage people to walk and cycle across their local communities more than they did prior to the game and by building these everyday habits into their lives. This not only benefit the participants own mental and physical well-being, but also minimises the impact participants own personal travel decisions have on the environment around them and as a result improves air quality.

The project involves the collection of personal data, when participants are asked for personal details when they sign up/register to the scheme. As part of the registration, participants will be asked to complete a health survey at the beginning and the end of the game. Completion of the survey is optional however it is incentivised by awarding game points at the end of the game. Health data will enable Intelligent Health to identify baseline fitness levels and levels immediately after participation and again up to twelve months later. As part of the registration players must agree to Beat the Street terms and conditions. Data is also processed by South Lanarkshire Council to monitor the success of the programme.

Children can play without providing any data as the Fobs can be pre-allocated to a team however adult participants with a card must register if they wish to join a team and an adult must register the teams. Participants can play for their own enjoyment and not join a team if they do not wish to register but only players who have registered can check the number of points on their card or fob and have the opportunity to win prizes.

All personal and sensitive personal data is processed in line with the requirements of the UK General Data Protection Regulations and Data Protection Act 2018.
