Scam | DVLA - missed car tax payment |
Details of scam | If you receive an email from the DVLA, stating you have missed a car tax payment and asking you to follow a link to enter your bank information, delete it! This is a #scam, which could result in your bank account being emptied. The email will look legitimate, with official DVLA branding being used. The email will state, “Your latest vehicle tax payment failed. It appears that some of the billing details associated with you might have expired or otherwise changed.” It then goes on to say, “our system will automatically retry the billing process once your billing details have been updated.” “It can take up to 5 working days for the records to update. In order to continue to the update page, please use the following link.” “Please note: If you don’t pay your vehicle tax on time you can be fined up to £1,000, on your details passed to a debt collection agency.” The DVLA has stated that they will not request this type of information, or notify you of a missed payment by text or email. For all matters related to the DVLA, make sure to use the gov.uk website and never enter your bank information in to a site that you have used an emailed link to get to…for any type of payment. |
