Council Resource | Community and Enterprise |
Service Area | Community and Enterprise |
Aims and Objectives | To reduce the incidence of crimes resulting from bogus callers, rogue traders and distraction burglary by raising awareness in the community, educating householders and in particular older and more vulnerable persons and encouraging them to improve their home security. The initiative has been developed in partnership with Strathclyde Police, Community Wardens and other services within the council and is being piloted in ten areas within South Lanarkshire area. To empower these residents to say no to unwanted callers and to discourage unscrupulous traders from targeting vulnerable groups in the community. Interest in this initiative as a result of the pilot has already been shown by elected members, problem solving groups and Better Government for Older People. |
Conclusion | The Cold Calling Control Zone initiative called "Doorstep Crime - Don't be a Victim" has been funded by the Community Safety Partnership in an effort to protect and educate South Lanarkshire residents from bogus/rogue traders. The initiative is being piloted in ten locations across the area and is focussing primarily on elderly and vulnerable groups. The conclusion of this initial equality impact assessment is that there are not any adverse impacts on any part of the community covered by equalities legislation, or on community relations. This is a pilot initiative and the results from this will be reviewed in March 2009. The impact of this initiative will be published in the media, South Lanarkshire website and reported to Community Safety Partnership and council senior management. Monitoring and evaluation of the project should highlight whether or not a full impact assessment is required. |
