Blantyre Futures
Introduction
Blantyre is a town on the north edge of South Lanarkshire which has a population of around 18,000 residents. Perhaps best known for its mining history, Blantyre is an ever expanding town with new housing developments expanding towards East Kilbride and Cambuslang, and is the birthplace of famous explorer, David Livingstone. The town is very proud of its mining history and still celebrates that heritage to this day.
Blantyre has a well established town centre with a variety of independent shops and businesses. The town is well served by five primary schools, two secondary schools, several nurseries, a sports centre, parks and much more. Blantyre has a number of active community and voluntary organisations that serve the town. These groups and organisations focus on providing opportunities for residents of all ages, including social, recreational and activity based initiatives. The strong sense of community is clear and many residents have given years of commitment to contribute to the continued growth and vibrancy of the town.
The Blantyre Futures plan sets out priorities identified by its residents and highlights the great work happening in the area which has made a positive contribution. The Blantyre Futures Stakeholder group is made up of residents, local groups and representatives from local and national organisations.
