Septic tanks and cesspit emptying
If you have a septic tank it should be pumped out annually, or the sludge and scum layers should be measured at least once a year so that solids don't wash out into the soil treatment system. Solids can clog the soil and stop it working properly.
Cesspits in general do not have an outfall and need to be emptied more often.
Scottish Water empties septic tanks and cesspits - the cost depends on their size and function.
Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) controls what is allowed to discharge from septic tanks and cesspits into the water course.
If you have any concerns about a septic tank or cesspit contact Environmental Services.
