Essential improvements to be made to bridge
Published: Tuesday 25 February 2025
Extensive improvement works are to take place on a bridge near a village in Clydesdale.
The work on Elvanfoot Bridge on the A702 at Elvanfoot is due to start on Monday 3 March and is scheduled to be completed by Monday 31 March, weather and resources permitting.
It means that Dumfries Road, Elvanfoot will be closed between B7040 Leadhills Road and Station Road, Elvanfoot, for the duration of the works.
A fully signed diversion route will be in place, which will be via the A702, A76, B740, B7078 and A702.
Pedestrian access over the bridge will be maintained.
Masonry parapets will be taken down and rebuilt, the masonry arch and steel bracing components will be refurbished, the road will be resurfaced and high containment kerbing installed. An altered road layout will include priority-controlled traffic flow at this narrow bridge.
Head of Roads, Fleet and Transportation Services, Colin Park, said: “These works are essential to safeguard the structural integrity and future operational status of Elvanfoot Bridge.
“We appreciate the works may cause inconvenience for some road users, and we apologise in advance.
“We would ask road users to avoid the area during the works if at all possible, and if not to take note of the diversion route which we appreciate is a lengthy one.
“I am sure all road users will appreciate the improvements we have made once they are complete.”
