Parental involvement and parent councils
Between the ages of five and 16 children spend only 15% of their time in school. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child's learning, children do better at school and throughout life. Parental representation is about helping parents and schools work together as partners in children's learning.
The main aims of the parent councils are to:
- help parents become more involved with their child's education and learning
- encourage parents to participate in the life of the school
You automatically become a member of the parent forum at your child's school and are entitled to have a say in what happens at the school. You can also decide to form a parent council to represent you and other parents.
We have 148 parent councils in our schools, run by parents and carers. We have prepared an introductory guide and strategy for use by parents/carers and Parent Councils.
A range of forms in Word version are available from Education Resources. For more information or a copy of the forms please fill out the Education enquiry form.
