Archives and records
Our Archives and Information Management Service, based at the South Lanarkshire Council Archives and Records Centre, is responsible for the selection and preservation of records and archives relating to the South Lanarkshire area.
We select and preserve the records of the council and the local authorities that existed before South Lanarkshire was established. We also preserve the records of local organisations, businesses and individuals.
Archives are unique, irreplaceable records. They are valuable because they provide evidence and information about past events, activities and people. These records can help us understand events from the past and the present and they can help inform us to make decisions on the future.
You can use archives to research your family tree, the building of your house and the development of your local area and community, and to investigate the actions of local and central government.
Everyone is welcome to use our archive. We hold a wide selection of records relating to official council business, such as minutes and committee papers, some local school records, photographs and historical records of East Kilbride Development Corporation. We also have local business records from local solicitors and architects, as well as some local community records.
Donating records
We are committed to preserving as much information as possible regarding the rich and varied history of South Lanarkshire and its people. If you have any interesting and unique material that you wish to donate and add to our collections please contact the Archives and record centre.
