Environmental volunteering

Get involved in local nature projects

Volunteering is a great way to look after the countryside, learn new skills and meet people who care about the local environment. We support environmental volunteers across South Lanarkshire and help connect people with opportunities close to where they live.

You can get involved whether you want to help outdoors, join a local group or take part in one-off activities throughout the year.

How we support volunteers

We work with volunteer groups and community organisations to help them carry out practical improvements to local sites. This includes support with funding, setting up groups, running events and organising hands-on conservation work.

We also run an Environmental Volunteers Network. Through the network, we share information about events, training opportunities and volunteering activities across South Lanarkshire.

Conservation work and events

There are regular conservation work days at sites across South Lanarkshire. This includes working with local groups such as the Cadzow Crew, who carry out practical tasks in places like Cadzow Glen and South Haugh in Hamilton.

Activities vary throughout the year and may include path work, woodland management, planting and general site improvements. No previous experience is needed for most activities.

Join the Environmental Volunteers Network

You can join the Environmental Volunteers Network if you want to volunteer, find a group near you or stay informed about upcoming events and training.

For the latest news and activities, you can also follow Countryside Rangers on Facebook.

Other volunteering opportunities

Many organisations across the UK also offer environmental volunteering opportunities, including:

You can also find volunteering roles, training courses and jobs on the Countryside Jobs Service and through Scotland’s Environment website.
